Discovery of the maintenance mechanism of mitochondrial DNA in HeLa cells

Biologists at the Graduate School of Science and ITbM at Nagoya University, have discovered for the first time, on how mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) increases in HeLa cells. mtDNA are contained in the mitochondria, which are organelles responsible for creating energy in cells. The group used live imaging techniques to elucidate the mechanism on how mtDNA is maintained properly in cells.
