Profile:

Born in 1971 (USA) and brought up in Tokyo. After receiving his Ph.D. degree at Kyoto University, he became a full professor at Nagoya University in 2008 and the center director of the Institute of Transformative Bio-Molecules (ITbM) in 2012. Itami is the youngest Japanese chemist at the moment to receive the ACS Cope Scholar Award. With "deriving answers with molecules" as his motto, he aims to develop revolutionary functional molecules at the interface of chemistry, biology and materials science. As well as developing many new catalysts and reactions that enable the synthesis of innovative molecules, he is contributing to advances in the research of chemical and pharmaceutical industries, and is making new trends in the field of nanocarbons.

Contents of the lecture:

I strongly believe in the power of molecules. As many of you know, there are many problems that exist around the world, such as energy, food, environmental and medical issues. What I believe is that we will be able to provide answers to many of these problems with molecules. The goal of my research is to develop and deliver revolutionary functional molecules that can solve the problems above. As this will be difficult in carrying out research in one field alone, the key to accomplishing this is by integrating different research fields. In this lecture, I will talk about my research based on the numerous possibilities of molecules and the catalysts opening up the field of synthetic chemistry.
