ITbM-GTR Seminar

Dear all,

I would like to inform you the following seminar will be held as follows.

ITbM-GTR Seminar
Speaker: Dr. Satoshi Ogawa (Department of Botany & Plant Sciences, University of California, Riverside)
Title: Molecular basis underlying host tropism in Orobanchaceae parasitic plants
Date: 13:30〜14:30, Monday, April 10th, 2023
Language: English
Venue: Lecture room, 1F, ITbM

Abstract:
Orobanchaceae parasitic plants establish connections between their roots and those of their host plants to deprive
them of nutrients and water. Certain species, such as Striga spp., are devastating for major crops and pose a severe
threat to global food security. These plants have evolved the ability to grow their roots towards hosts, known as host
tropism, to ensure accurate parasitism. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms remained largely elusive.
To characterize host tropism, we employed the model facultative root parasite Phtheirospermum japonicum, which can
survive both with and without hosts. We demonstrated that host-derived strigolactones (SLs) act as chemoattractants
for host tropism. Our findings further indicate that SLs trigger an asymmetric auxin response in P. japonicum roots,
which is impaired under ammonium-rich conditions. We also identified SL receptors that contribute to host tropism.
Additionally, in this seminar, I will present another recently uncovered molecular basis underlying parasitism in Orobanchaceae parasites.

Thank you very much for your cooperation and your participation will be greatly appreciated!
