Managing Variability in Medicinal Cannabis: From Cultivation to Phytochemistry
Medicinal Cannabis sativa L. is increasingly regarded as a pharmaceutical crop, although the production of standardized plant material remains challenging because of the high variability of its chemical composition. Cannabinoids, terpenes and other specialized metabolites are influenced by several interacting factors, including genetic background, plant development, cultivation conditions and post-harvest management. The discussion will focus on the main factors influencing the accumulation of cannabinoids, terpenes and other specialized metabolites, with particular attention to controlled cultivation, water availability, mineral nutrition, plant architecture and post-harvest processing. Experimental approaches based on greenhouse and controlled-environment systems, hydroponics and aeroponics, genetic characterization and chemical analysis will be used as examples to illustrate how agronomic management can contribute to reducing variability and improving the reproducibility of medicinal Cannabis production. The event is intended as an opportunity to share experiences and stimulate discussion on the agronomic and physiological challenges associated with Cannabis as a high-value pharmaceutical crop, highlighting possible links with plant physiology, crop management, controlled-environment agriculture and quality standardization.
