The Institute of Transformative Bio-Molecules (WPI-ITbM) is engaged in several initiatives under the concept of "MIX", one of which is the ITbM Gallery. The ITbM Gallery focuses on the theme of "MIX" between science and art. Through exhibitions of artistic works, we aim to promote interaction with artists and inspire researchers in the scientific field to gain new perspectives. We want to create opportunities for not only the university community but also the public to experience this "MIX" of science and art, making this space a crossroads for both fields.
The 40th ITbM Gallery hosts Someday, you will be a real boy. by Kaoru Sugita. As new biotechnologies--gene editing, artificial reproduction, and artificial wombs--continue to evolve, the exhibition turns our attention to how these advances reshape the ways we imagine life and motherhood. Sugita's video installations trace the ethical and existential dilemmas of what she calls "delegated life," lives conceived or sustained through technological means. Drawing on field research and constructed with computer-generated imagery, her works sketch near-future worlds where the boundaries between the natural and the artificial begin to blur. Rather than offering answers, the exhibition opens a quiet space to consider both the promises and the unease of scientific progress, and to reflect on what it means to be human in the years to come.
